Apple Ipad
The iPad is manufactured by Apple and is a tablet computer
which was designed and developed by the company. It is primarily
marketed towards being a platform for audio and visual media. The
iPad in particular is specialised in displaying books, periodicals,
movies, music, games and also web content. The product weighs
around 1.5 pounds and it is the size and weight of most
contemporary smartphones and laptop computers. This Apple iPad
was launched to market in April 2010 and sole 3 million units within
80 days.
The operating system
which is used on the
platform is the same as on the iPod Touch and the iPhone. It can
operate its own applications as well as one which have been
developed for the iPhone. Similar to other Apple products, the iPad
is operated through the multitouch display, this is seen as a move
away from the conventional tablet computer which usually uses a
keyboard. The screen is a touchscreen display which is 1024 x 768
pixels. The glass on the display is also finger print resistant and also
scratch resistant. The iPad is designed to be controlled with bare
fingers, normal gloves and styli that prevent electrical conductivity
may not be used. The tablet can use Wi Fi network trilateration
from Skyhook Wireless to provide location information to application
such as Google Maps. There is also a 3G model which contains A-
GPS to allow its position to be calculated with
GPS.
Two internal speakers are featured on the iPad,
these are able to push mono sound through two small sealed
channels to the three audio ports carved into the bottom right of
the unit. There is also a volume switch which is located on the right
hand side of the unit. A rechargeable lithium ion polymer battery is
located within the iPad. It is claimed that the battery can last for up
to 10 hours of video, 140 hours of audio playback or one month on
standby. Just like any other battery technology, the iPad’s LiPo
battery loses capacity over time. There are different internal
storage sizes available on the iPad, these include 16, 32, or 64 GB
flash drives. All of the data is stored on the flash drive and this
therefore means there is not any option to extend the storage
capacity.
Apple also sells a camera connection kit
which offers a SD card reader, although this can only be used for
the transfer of photos and videos. There are numerous software
applications included on the iPad, these include Safari, Mail, Photos,
Video, YouTube, iPod, iTunes, App Store, iBooks, Maps, Notes,
Calendar, Contacts and Spotlight Search.
The iPad is
also capable of syncing with Mac or Windows PC. Just like
numerous other Apple products, the iPad can be jailbroken which
means applications and programs can be downloaded without the
authorisation of Apple. Although once jailbroken, the iPad’s
warranty becomes void.
